thankfully, the only thing I have to worry about for the next 24 hours is Willowholme being flooded and power cutting out. for those people in a far worse position, not just Carlisle either, my heart goes out to you all. seriously though, I hope everyone stays safe

Flood defences at Kingfisher breached, really worried about this 2am high tide. A lot of sirens and police activity as well

The Weather 06 Dec 2025 01:21 #56

Just spoke to the police at the bridge who seem to think its just a matter of time before it goes.
They also said they have known for some time now that the situation is hopeless and are expecting something akin to 05 flooding. Just a matter of time.

Horrendous scenes from Carlisle. Didn't think I'd ever see it like that again, they told us the 2005 floods were a once in a hundred years phenomenon....

My thoughts and sympathy go out to all those affected, today football doesn't seem all that important.

My heart goes out to everyone affected. As already mentioned, it's scandalous that it could be allowed to happen again after all that money was spent.

Just came across this on twitter. Hope there's no long term damage, is there any point in re-doing the Neil Centre again?

Obviously questions are going to be asked about money spent since 2005 on flood defences.

I can understand it must be difficult to predict where and when the water is going to come from, but surely it can't be that difficult, after ten years to move the electricity
substations to higher ground. We did have 38 million spent after all.

Has there been a lot of power cuts around town ?

Remember doing the Stadium tour not long after the last flooding and the Guy explaining with great pride about how the new pitch was laid -it was like a carpet that day. Words cannot describe the utter devastation for people throughout Cumbria. Our broken bridge up here in Fife and its consequences on local life do not compare a jot to having your home invaded by mother nature --stay safe people.

The post event analysis will be interesting. Clearly Denton Holme has escaped this time but a colleague down Petterill Street says it was worse than 2005 — a good few feet higher. Have the defences just amplified the situation in some places? Even if the defences were breached they should hold some extra water back surely?

I've just had a look at the aerial footage on the BBC website.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35023558

What's interesting is it appears that the flood defenses are now holding the water *in*, stopping it from draining away.

Yeah, I really don't know how they work exiled, or where they are supposed to divert the water to, but clients in Cockermouth and Keswick tell me it is different from last time. The water in Cockermouth came from different areas, and it was a good deal lower than the last time. Keswick was much higher, and the damage to some of our clients there has been considerable, but some clients who had homes flooded last time haven't this time and vice versa. So I assume that the defences only partly worked in both cases, but I'm no expert.

Flood defences are all good and dandy but I suppose the water has to go somewhere else at the end of the day.

(PS I'm no expert)

The defences we have (Carlisle) would have held the 2005 and 2009 events back with a reasonable amount of room to spare. The amount of water that has come this time though, is not too far off being as much as those two events combined and that's why they've overtopped.
