The land cruisers the UN uses have solar panels in the roof which charge batteries. It only gives a small range and it's to supplement the diesel engine, so you don't get stranded if you run out of fuel. But I think that technology will be the way forward.
But what to do about lithium? There isn't enough to sustain car production

The future must be for battery ' families ' common design and specification of varying capacity.

Pull into the battery station, and have a battery exchanged in minutes, and drive on.

Or, a combination of battery powered homes/vehicles using solar/wind and grid charging, where in rural areas linking vehicles at public events can provide a power supply.

The choice and combinations are never ending, raw materials is the weak link.
