Then he has a dip in form. While I have no problem people criticising him, the level to which Crunchblue went on a daily basis had me questioning whether there was a non-football motive behind his anti-Bennett obsession. He even claimed Richard Offiong showed better potential!! The fact that Bennett is in his first full season in league football and how well he’d performed at the start of the season was completely overlooked.

Yes, Bennett could end up being a bad signing; but surely he deserves a decent shot at it here.

Just like Paddy Madden and Glenn Murray did but were slagged off after only a few games.

There’s Cumbrian hospitality for you...]]>

My mind is still in conflict with itself over him. If he keeps up that performance rate, however, there’s no question he’s been a good signing. Time will tell...

Give him his due though, he’s our best number 14 since Jabo.

Liddle - 7 - good performance, changing my original opinion of him by the game
Hill - 7 - no need to explain
Parkes - 7 - glad he’s back. Drove forward to relieve pressure
Grainger - 6 - looked slow and struggled with his positioning
Joyce - 6 - hit and miss all game
Jones - 6 - as Joyce. Not as bad as some around me made out
Lambe - 7 - offered an option and put in yards. Tired and correct to come off.
Hope - 8 - pressure on defence was brilliant, noticed a real difference in their play when he went off
Bennett - 9 - deserved MOTM. Two games doesn’t make a player but what a performance from him yesterday. Credit where due.

Devitt - 6 - solid but not a great deal to do
Etuhu - 6 - cleared defensive pressure on a few occasions
Miller - 6 - not enough time to do much

Can’t give anything higher than a 7 to a defence that conceded two.

Thought we played some good football up until Hope was pulled. The pressure him and Bennett were putting the defence under was good and allowed us to start the second phase of player higher up the pitch. After that, we saw a lot more of them.

Enjoyed the grit and strength in challenges.

Good game all in all, worth the £6.

Bennett was struggling for form and confidence, he looked totally incapable of performing at this level. He probably thought a loan spell in the league below would do him good, get him scoring and confident again.

A month ago I doubt many on here would have objected to Bennett being loaned out.]]>

Players Ratings v Oldham - by: Markovitch https://www.thecumbrians.net/index.php/cufc-forum/main-forum/6388-players-ratings-v-oldham#132494 https://www.thecumbrians.net/index.php/cufc-forum/main-forum/6388-players-ratings-v-oldham#132494 Brown Gave their left back a tough game
Liddle Thought the centre 3 played well but Liddle was the pick. Really turned around some shocking early season performances to looking very good, would have been my man of the match.

Grainger Given the absolute run around by their number 2 who put in cross after cross unchallenged.
Jones Joyce Looked outgunned in the middle of the park by Oldham. Liddle came forward to help out and he did better than either of these.
Lambe Flitted in and out as usual
Hope Their number 40 was an excellent player but HH gave him some stick. Just out classed, though a great finish for his goal
Bennett Looking like a much better player as, ahem, I said he would. Had a clear height advantage over the 2 centre backs and used that well. Two good goals, nice flick ons and a physical presence up front that Oldham struggled to deal with. Worrying he still can’t last 90 minutes.

Devitt Didn’t do much.
Etuhu A baffling substitution. Their 2 was murdering Grainger with his pace so Curle brought on the only player in the squad slower than Grainger to provide cover. When we had Adams on the bench!
Miller Did what he could

Curle The line-up he went with performed well but when under the cosh his substitutions were simply weird. Etuhu to cover a nippy winger then he waited and waited to use the other 2 when players were clearly tiring.

Oldham Nos 2 and 40 were the best 2 players on the pitch. Some of the others were poor though. I looked at the team sheet before the game and wondered how we would cope with Davies and Doyle, they didn’t do anything. You can see why they are struggling at that level]]>

In terms of the current owners it was the most important game of the season as the next round will be.

Still doesn’t excuse the shit position in the league though, need to win on Saturday but I think more emphasis will be out in winning on Wednesday.

Anyway good win, need to follow it up to the next round.

Of course there will be more emphasis on winning on Wednesday, purely because it is the next game.

also the money for winning the group along with fa cup money ( which will have a bearing come January)

Although I myself will not be going I do wish the team all the best.

Totally agree about the Bristol City player, clearly pushed in the chest yet went down holding his face in order to get the opposition player sent off. Similar to when Rivaldo had the ball kicked at him in the WC or when Bilic got Blanc sent off in the WC Semi and subsequently banned from the biggest game of his life.

Not sure this new retrospective method of dealing with divers and cheats can be classed as a 'law' though, similar to goalline technology which isn't a law of the game, it's a method used to aid referees and provide a fairer outcome. Similarly it isn't used across all tiers of the game either. Neither of these will be included in the laws of the game I wouldn't have thought.]]>

We could get to the third round and get an inspiring away tie at Ipswich or something at the same time.

But I do understand your sentiment though as we all want them gone, thing is the better the manager the longer they stay really - your best hope in this scenario is if old diamond head gets re-appointed and they will be gone in no time.

I don't get how Kavanagh was in the box today, absolutely gobsmacked how Jenkins could allow someone who almost ruined the club back in the ground full stop - if he was a former employee of yourself who wasted loads of your cash you would hardly welcome him back with open arms.

But Jenkins wanted us to struggle so, Kavanagh was carrying out intructions!]]>

For teams in league 1/2 attendances are down on league games but for non league it’s up, the same happens though for league 1/2 sides the further they go in the FA cup. I agree though with flume you remember the FA cup, big games, the Arsenal’s, Liverpool’s, Sheffield wednesdays then the league games of that year.

I think the majority of supporters would agree the FA cup has lost a bit of magic and isn’t the same. Was it Man Utd fault, maybe, I think it’s a lot of things rather than one.

On Carlisle United MRF point Is true. But for the supporters you can’t beat a 3rd round draw against a big side.]]>

17/18 FA Cup 1st Round - Oldham (H) Match Thread - by: Bumble https://www.thecumbrians.net/index.php/cufc-forum/main-forum/6382-17-18-fa-cup-1st-round-oldham-h-match-thread?start=50#132474 https://www.thecumbrians.net/index.php/cufc-forum/main-forum/6382-17-18-fa-cup-1st-round-oldham-h-match-thread?start=50#132474
It was lovely seeing folk I hadn't seen for a while and having a chat.

I bought two tickets for the Paddock, no queue. I was asked for my postcode but heyho I can cope with that when its early and there isnt a queue.

Son had a sausage sandwich from the new van and said it was really good. I just had a diet coke, which at £1.50 was ten pence cheaper than last season.

We went up to the Sunset Suite for ten minutes. Nice to see it was reasonably full. Not bursting at the seams but hard to find a seat, yet still relatively easy to get served. A big difference to last season when it was often nearly empty.

We went into the Paddock to stand as near as we could to the top of the tunnel. . . which turned out to be the top of the tunnel. I always used to stand there, sad to see that so many that were seasoned die hards weren't there. The WRE looked sparse, the away area had a bit of life about it. I do like a decent away following, it always makes it seem more of an occasion.

Turning round from the pitch, Neil Macdonald and Eric Kinder were in the away directors box. I didn't see Graham Kavanagh but folk were saying he was there. Paul Scholes wasn't there, maybe Wellens has got the Oldham job, he certainly looks as though he has the players working for him, despite the result.

The match started, I was worried, I thought Oldham looked decent. They played with confidence, passing along the floor. As the half wore on I felt we were giving the ball away too much, rushing and not looking up to see where a pass was on. Couldn't fault our work rate though, we were certainly up for the match. So pleased for Bennett and Hope, both have had stick from the fans in the past, both got roundly applauded for their goals.

The match was a typical Carlisle United rollercoaster, going through the "how are we winning this" to the "FFS we are going to throw it away" to the "How many added minutes, where's he got them from" to the "never in doubt". The usual moans about the referee, most of them justified.

Then the best bit, walking out of the paddock with that communal smile that you only get from a win. That grin that spreads just a bit wider on FA cup days when you start to dream of the next round and hopefully a good draw an a clear path to round 3,

So roll on Monday night and the draw. Yeovil away anyone?]]>

We could get to the third round and get an inspiring away tie at Ipswich or something at the same time.

But I do understand your sentiment though as we all want them gone, thing is the better the manager the longer they stay really - your best hope in this scenario is if old diamond head gets re-appointed and they will be gone in no time.

I don't get how Kavanagh was in the box today, absolutely gobsmacked how Jenkins could allow someone who almost ruined the club back in the ground full stop - if he was a former employee of yourself who wasted loads of your cash you would hardly welcome him back with open arms.]]>

It has just changed. 25 years ago the likes of Everton, Chelsea and Newcastle were playing in half-empty ground in league matches and the FA Cup was still a bigger draw.

Still, I enjoyed it very much today. A decent draw and we could be going to Wembley in a few weeks time.]]>

Bonham 7 some good stops but still prats about with the short passes at the back
Brown 7 solid but started to tire near the end an defended less effectively
Liddle 8 anticipated well and combines well with Hill
Hill 8 see above
Parkes 7 a good reliable performance
Grainger 6 good corner for our first but very weak defensively
Joyce 7 the usual battling performance
Jones 6 a lot of good work undone by losing possession
Lambe 7 worked very hard defensively and a nice cross for our 3rd
Hope 7 took his goal extremely well
Bennett 8 what a difference a goal ( or two ) makes. Hope he can go on from here.]]>

Give over ;). I’ve honestly never seen it that way. When we beat Tranmere who were in the championship at the time that was a giant killing. I’ve never classed what happened today as one although I prob would be more inclined if a bottom half championship club beat one of the big premier clubs.]]>

3,700 at Blackburn
3,200 at Wigan
3,700 at Peterboro
2,800 at Northampton
and only 1,700 at Colchester

One things for certain the 'stay aways' missed a treat. :)]]>

Brown - 8 Tired as little bit towards the end but thought he really did 'put in a shift'
Grainger - 7 Probably not at his best and seemed to struggle with their right winger early on, but grew into the game, and in the end led by example.
Parkes - 7 Solid
Hill - 8 Best defender for us, made some great last minute stoppages
Liddle - 8 another great game
Joyce -7 Dont think he let one pass go astray, however still seems to be very reluctant to pass forwards
Jones - 7 A real Jekyll and Hyde performance, one minute breaking up play, finding space and looking all round superb!!......the next giving the ball away cheaply
Lambe - 7 Worked tirelessly
Hope - 7 Again worked his backside off, maybe a tad lacking in pace from time to time, took his goal well.
Bennett - 9 Superb all round display, keep this up and we have found one hell of a player.

Subs - all 7. All did the job that was required.

Ref - 6 Seemed to favour Oldham 'a lot' early doors, but didn't notice him much over the last hour, sensible to keep his cards in his pockets for as long as he did.

All about right bry ........some folk I know go for a Jimmy in the hope that very thing happens ;)

On Bennett ...my only criticism today was on a couple of occasions he wasn't up with play 2nd half. Hope had controlled a ball over the top, heading for the area, two if not three if theirs chasing him down .....he could have done with back up ...Richie was ambling about just north of the centre circle Hallam was on his own..... And lost the ball as had too much to do.

Everybody played their part apart from that.
( I actually thought Grainger was feeling a niggle near the end, just something I noticed him do)]]>

Brown 7 - like this lad a lot, another solid defensive display
Grainger 6 - struggled to deal with Oldham full back second half, distribution not great
Liddle 8 - MoM, different player next to Hill
Hill 8 - dealt with a physical attack well, great in the air.
Parkes 7 - steady, good in the air aswell.

Jones 5 - one of the worst midfield passing displays I've seen in a long time
Joyce 7 - good game and battled well, couple of dodgy moments.
Lambe 6 - pretty anonymous but great cross for third

Hope 6 - great strike and worked hard but very little quality or end product
Bennett 8 - had a lot more about his game today, pretty much what I expected when he arrived.

Subs - little impact tbh.

Curle 8 - thought he got it pretty much spot on today, despite what the usual pre-match post-team announcement doom-mongers thought. Played three centre halfs to nullify a decent attack who score goals and for a good hour it worked. Much better presence up front aswell which provided an outlet against a team who kept the ball for long periods. Game changed when we went three up and they brought Holloway on and threw caution to the wind a bit and their right back started causing us trouble getting forward. Sacrificed a striker for Etuhu to try and nullify this and tighten things up. Beat a half decent side today with fight more than finesse which shows there's more than one way to skin a cat.]]>

See the Bennett thread.

I saw some good signs at chesterfield last week. He’s not trying to flick every ball on anymore which was a major gripe I had with him. He’s now stepping back and taking the ball on his chest, looking capable of holding the ball up and actually using his physical size. Credit should maybe go to the coaching staff for that i guess.

2 games hasn’t won me over, but as I said after chesterfield it’s a good start and I’m hoping he continues this level of improvement.

When he was playing shite I always said after criticising him that I’d love to be proved wrong. Hopefully I am.]]>
