Really generous of them to give the clubs money that actually already belongs to them.

And don't know whether you saw it but the tv company that has the rights for the Bundesliga in Germany today put the clubs on notice that they are stopping all rights payments with immediate effect and that will continue until they start to receive content again I wonder how long it will take Sky and BT to follow ?

Coventry City, Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient have put their players on temporary leave as a result of the financial effects of coronavirus.

It means they will be paid 80% of their wages - up to £2,500 a month - via the government's job retention scheme.

But, you can't blame them, the whole footy game at that level is just money laundering.

Other than the knock-on for clubs further down [ which I still think they could get over and come out stronger in the end especially those who have a proper fan base to who they could turn ] i.d love it if Sky and BT pulled the plug on the PL.

Doesn't really matter who the mystery footballer is, as it is the sentiments that count - however my money is on Troy Deeney for what it is worth.
It really does prove how obscene the salaries are, particularly at the top level, however footballers aren't the only ones - hedge fund managers, CEO of Persimmon Homes and bankers of all descriptions spring to mind.

Strongly rumoured that its Deeney but Watford fans seem to think that it's not him and tbh the language doesn't come across as being him either.

I too would like to think that this could be a bit of a watershed moment depending upon how long it is going to take to get back to 'normal'.
We got rid of Sky a while back, but have a phone/broadband /tv package (including the sport) with BT.
I have to admit to feeling a bit guilty about playing a part in the feeding frenzy of what is elite football.

I have the same but as I only pay 3 quid for the sport element and never watch the PL just the National league and occasionally the odd European game I don't consider it bad value.

I think more people would stick with BT without the football than would with Sky but they're definitely going the wrong way with going over to Sky like packages . Given their penatration of the broadband /TV market theres an obvious solution but its so obvious that they cant see it.

People shouldn't be moaning about this the government created the rules and i.m pretty sure could change them if they wanted to.

But if I was Boris right now i.d impose a 100% emergency tax on anything anybody earns over 50k a week but give them the opportunity to donate an identical sum to charity instead if that's what they chose to do

Happy days, hopefully it'll get rid of all the overpaid underperforming extra ballast that all PL clubs squads contain, hopefully to be replaced by young English talent. That'll support the lower league pyramid teams that survive, this crisis.

And help the English game, 2026 World Cup, no more years of hurt.

The government have a massive part to play here very strict quotas on work permits are what is needed because you really can't trust the PL owners to police themselves and that would have a knock-on bonus for FL clubs as the value of homegrown players grows all they have to then is tell the PL where to stick their half a million a year and pathetic harvesting and stockpiling of any lad who shows the slightest talent and then instead of just giving each club a 1.2 million pound bailout every year pay that money to the FL who then distribute on a reward basis ie the more money you bring in from ticket sales, transfers, investment and commercial activity and the more homegrown academy graduates you play the more money you earn from the pot which stops rewarding clubs who just want to tread water putting an end to mid tale security when every club is fighting to either get promoted or saving themselves from being relegated which in turn would kill off the debt that clubs are running with in that if you want to buy a club you.ll be buying it virtually debt-free and if you're an owner you.ll make your club as attractive as is possible ie successful to attract the best price for it.

What's killing lower league football is the debt the clubs are holding to current and previous owners take that away and the banks will become a lot friendlier again making everyones life a lot easier meaning less reliance on the PL .s charity.

Which is why they.ll play those games if it takes them till Xmas the word is the further away the start date the harder they will be pushing for the Euros to be pushed back. But even then all lot of them will still have a problem in that Sky/BT won't be paying another penny till the players are on the grass again and the cash flow problem that that will bring. Now clubs like Burnley who have been sensible should have the reserves and low-cost base to ride it out but its said the club with the biggest problem would Villa who went into this season already owing over half of whatever they earned from the PL.

People do need to watch on the attack with government support to football in general on two reasons.

Firstly that option is keeping a lot of non league clubs alive. I know my local club Stalybridge would have died but for the ‘small business’ grants and support paying players........clubs like them have done nothing to deserve being shoved in with rest in the top 4 leagues.

Secondly the staff being ‘dumped’ on taxpayer by these clubs are you basic average workers on basic pay, not the vastly overpaid.

Government I suppose could whack a nice new tax on future tv deals to claw it back.

The lesson needing to be learned on this is a time to finally control the ridiculous wages at all levels. I actually fine the L1/L2 wages as obscene as the premiership, 4th level dross on 1-5,000 a week..... our level pay should be no more than basic pay.

Time for fifa to put in universal wage caps for levels after this big warning to how vulnerable the entire game is, but since football gets more and more corrupt the higher you go it has no chance of changing.

Key now is keeping as many clubs alive as can and stopping prem using this to force in their b teams

Is that in response to my comments about Leeds Nobby?
It has meant that all staff have been paid in full without applying for furlough if it is (apologies if it is not). I do agree that a wage cut woud be better but think that will come (I think Bielsa has actually done it already, but not 100% sure on this).
What I don't get about this furlough business is how much does it actually save the clubs like Liverpool, Spurs and Newcastle. Can't be much in the grand scheme of things.

All the PFA had to suggest to Players was to get paid as normal, then donate a cut to support Club Staff and local NHS services. Easily set up and some good publicity for the Club and local community. Simple.

Zero surprise a Gordon Taylor led setup has turned it into a circus...

The 30% cut to the Premier League players should be on take home pay (i.e. after tax has been paid).

Personally I think all players should take a pay cut to £2,000 a week if they are paid more, rather than furlough support staff,
If they can't live on a £1million pound a year something is seriously wrong.
