The January transfer window is nothing to do with ‘bids’. It is a window for the transfer of players - very different to bids and discussions, which can, and do, happen, at any time of year.

If the other clubs didn't match Evertons valuation then more fool them as an initial 750k is a snip for a top flight team - makes you wonder what the other clubs were bidding then, I would love to know how much Rangers and Celtic valued him at.

Our investment in youth is just a cash cow for the Custodians formerly known as The Temporary Custodians it's nothing to do with developing a team like Crewe...

Ampadu actually cost Chelsea £1.3m up front; the add-ons, if they ever pay them, take it over £2m depending on how many games he plays for Chelsea, which may not be many, and there’s a sell-on percentage too.

Lots of talk about Branthwaite being worth x or Branthwaite being worth y. There is a simple answer as to how much he is worth. He is worth whatever a club is willing to pay for him. Not a penny more, not a penny less.

It's a bit like selling your house. You have several viewings, and if more than one viewers want your house then a bidding process starts. You surely don't take the first offer. A bit like this for Branthwaite. If you really want that house then you will try to outbid the others. Why not put him up for auction with a reserve of 1.5 million.

People keep on referring to Ampadu but as has already been stated it’s a poor comparison. He was in the first team at Exeter at 15, and was a regular when fit (he missed a big chunk of his debut season with injury). He’d moved by the time he was 16 and by the time of the tribunal he was a full international (after previously playing for every age group internationally) and had played a dozen games for Chelsea (the previous season’s premier league champions). What’s Branthwaite got on his CV?

Anyhow, the Ampadu transfer fee was only £1.3m (less than £1million immediately) with the rest dependent on appearances.

One thing I will say for Branthwaite is in his last 5 games for the club we’ve only conceded 1 goal.

In the 4 games he’s missed over the same period we’ve conceded 10.

What really pisses me off most about all this is how the Premier League Clubs are trying to get young players from L1/2 for peanuts, money that should help small clubs like ours survive for a few more years. Yet they think nothing of spunking millions on bang average players from all over the world and millions on sacking managers after a couple of defeats.

I'd use weekly wage or potential weekly wage to determine value of a young player - multiplied by remaining length of career.

So if Branthwaite's worth (or been offered) a contract (currently) of £1200 a week and he has a 17 year career ahead of him - that equals roughly £1 million.

That's where bids should start - and you can add your various clauses on top.
