£750k is pitiful when you have so many big, wealthy clubs interested.
Rangers paid us £600k for Paul Reid and that was 20 years ago - I don’t recall anything like the same level of interest in him.

This board of directors are still living 20 or even 30 years in the past, so i can see why they think this is a great deal.

They probably think the world record transfer fee is about £5 million.

Without checking, I’m sure Exeter got about 2.5 to 3 million for Ampadu from Chelsea a few years ago. He was the same age, experience and league as Branthwaite.

To be honest when I heard Man City, Arsenal, Celtic, Everton etc mentioned for Branthwaite I thought we’d get similar money, definitely 7 figures. Did not think for one second we wouldn’t even get a million.

Yes, they did, but they came through as I group if I recall (with Tony Hopper and Caig).

I think we do have a good crop of youngsters coming through. It helps them get a game as the standard of senior professionals is low, on the other hand it's more difficult playing in a struggling team. I can't think of many 17 year olds who have played regularly from the start for Carlisle, Jansen and Delap were older when they came through.

The Athletic journalists seem to be the ones in the know these days.

The club have been very lucky with these young players , two years ago Mcarron was playing for upperby, branthwaite for abbeytown and maybe only 3-5 years ago birch and Galloway were playing for Warwick wanderers . The club lost the best player they had to Newcastle but I’m not sure if we get any money from him ? Watched all the Carlisle lads play regularly as they were same year as my son , brilliant to see them all and it’s down to hard work and determination, Mcarrons dad used to drive him here from Appleby way every training and game so he was playing at a decent level .fair play like

Barnsley got £3 million for John Stones and a 15% sell on off Everton which netted them £6.7 million from his move to City I think he was more like 19 years old at the time

Seemed to me the club were trying to get him out of the door to generate money, especially with the contract offer they gave him, so you could be right, but suspct he was all for going.

John Stones was playing championship football prior to his move so was always going to command a bigger fee - not really a good comparison.

Ampadu had already been called up by his country by the time he moved to Chelsea, a country who were European Championship semi-finalists less than a year earlier.

Probably the closest comparison to Branthwaite would be Ben Wilmot who went from Stevenage to Watford 18 months ago. 18 year old centre-half who had made about a dozen appearances for a league two club (he had been called up by England u19’s though). Depending on which media outlet you believe he went from somewhere between £1m and £1.5m.

Nixon has probably agreed a silly basement figure for Branthwaite from Everton and even if any higher bids come in he will say it was a 'gentlemans agrement' to let him go to Everton.

The deal looks inevitable now, left out of today’s team and squad, albeit he has traveled with the team to Walsall.

My main priority is not going down. Going down under this ownership would be the beginning of the end of us imo.

If we accept a pittance but get him back on loan it will give us a better chance of surviving this season despite Pressley’s mess.

So in the short term I’d probably take a lower fee and a loan rather than more money and no loan back. Would still be pissed off though if we sold another young player for less than he’s worth.

If we don’t get a loan back in this deal then questions will have to be asked about the clubs desire to be a football league club. He’s been our best defender this season, so to just let him go mid season while our football league status is at risk would be stupidity imo.

Hopefully the rumours of a loan back are true.

Think G Jones has been our best defender - but Branthwaite has looked fairly comfortable. He’s made a couple of errors but they’ve just not cost us goals so hasn’t been highlighted like Webster et al.
