Hello, good morning, I would like to ask you about a former player of the club, Tony Shepherd, signed from Celtic Glasgow in 1989, and played for Carlisle United until 1991 (75 apps. and 8 goals), does anyone remember in what position he played or what type of player he was? Very thanks.

Real false dawn in that game, Gates plays Walwyn in to put us 1-0 up in front of a big August crowd...

4218...

That was a big August crowd in 1990!

Remember Seeing Tony Shepherd play for Celtic many times
Started off well and looked a great prospect
But started to get a bit of stick from the fans who expected another Paul McStay
Wasn't long before he started disappearing during games when things weren't going well
kind of got the impression he hadn't changed by the time he got to Carlisle

He got sent off at Southend after a player spat on him . Shepherd dropped him and walked .
When interviewed he basically said where he was brought up it was the lowest of the low so anyone would have done the same .

60K may have been a massive fee back then for us but nowadays it'd be astronomical.

I thought he was going to be a great signing as he’d played a fair bit for Celtic.

I remember sitting beside his father at Darlington once. He got sent off. His dad went ballistic!

He went on to be a fireman I think.

My memories of this player was he was average. Did not inspire the team, just showed no drive of passion.
Did we really pay that much for him.

Every Rose has it’s thorns .... do you mean the diabolical on line goalkeeper, who looked ok except when he played for us.

He was signed for £60000, which for us at the time was a massive fee. Because he came from Celtic I expected him to be Halpin standard. He worked hard, but I preferred Derek Walsh and Paul Gorman. I should have known better as I expected Robbie Wakenshaw to be Ian Bishop standard when we signed him from Everton. At least Shepherd put some effort in.

I thought he was a very decent midfielder box to box player with a will to win

I remember being excited when he signed. Halpin was a hero in my eyes and I hoped we were about to unearth another gem from Celtic. In truth he was just ok. Nothing outstanding. Played centre midfield but was more attack minded.
Undoubted highlight (apart from those in his hair) was scoring the winner in the top of the table clash, Tuesday night vs Exeter, in front of 8000+, a big crowd at the time. It felt like a massive win that would lead to certain promotion, but every "Rose" has its thorns...

From childhood memory he was a tough tackling central midfielder.

A quick google showed this link, where the celtic mag tracked him down for a chat:

Thanks for the reply, greetings.
